The pharmacy department at North West London Hospitals NHS Trust provides pharmacy services for Northwick Park Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and surrounding PCT community hospitals.

The pharmacy department offers a comprehensive pharmaceutical service, and houses the North Thames Medicines Information Centre and the London, South East and Eastern Clinical Pharmacy Unit.

Description of service

Almost every patient who attends hospital for treatment will receive some form of medication. The pharmacy department are the recognised experts on medicines within the Trust and are responsible for ensuring medication is available to patients when they need it.

When a patient comes into hospital, we ask that any medication that they may already be on is brought into hospital with them. This will then ensure that the correct medication is continued during the patient's stay and may even be used (if appropriate) while they are in hospital. Pharmacy is also able to provide information on any new medications that are started, such as how they should be taken and any side-effects.

The pharmacy offers a range of services including:

  • Dispensing medicines to inpatients, outpatients and patients being discharged from hospital.
  • Providing medicines advice for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Clinical pharmacy: Pharmacists promote the safe and appropriate use of medicines for all patients. Much of their work is situated on the wards and there are many specialist teams working in specific areas of the hospital such as infectious diseases and mental health, as well as teams that work to facilitate a speedy discharge from certain areas in the hospital.
  • Manufacturing: Preparing medicines not commercially available including chemotherapy, intravenous injections, feeding solutions and ointments.

If you have been prescribed medication from the Trust and you have any questions, please call the helpline on: 020 8869 2762 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).
