Occupational Therapy
The occupational therapy department provides services to inpatients and outpatients across both Central Middlesex and Northwick Park hospital sites. Occupational therapists assist people to gain maximum independence to perform activities of daily living.
Within inpatients, the occupational therapists assess and treat patients with the following conditions:
- Stroke and Neuro
- Cardiology
- Vascular conditions including amputations
- Respiratory
- Elderly care
- Trauma and Orthopaedics
Within outpatients, the service runs a hand therapy unit which includes:
- Trauma
- Hand Surgery
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Osteo-arthritis
The service also provides a limited neurology outpatient service at Northwick Park Hospital.
Description of service
The main focus of inpatient occupational therapy assessment is to facilitate a safe discharge from the hospital to the community. This may include:
- Home visits
- Referral for equipment
- Education of carers
Rehabilitation is also provided as part of the multidisciplinary team incorporating goal-setting.
The hand therapy service provides assessment, treatment and individually-made splints. Education for patients with arthritis is provided within a group setting.

The occupational therapy department is based in the therapies block, on level 4 at Northwick Park Hospital.
Central Middlesex Hospital
The occupational therapy department is based on Gladstone 4, on the first floor at Central Middlesex Hospital.
