James Ward picks up award for excellence

Staff on James Ward at Northwick Park Hospital are celebrating this week after picking up the top honour in the first ever staff excellence awards launched by The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust.

The awards scheme has been set up to recognise the hard work of staff working across the Trust which covers Central Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal and Northwick Park and St Mark’s Hospitals in Harrow. Thirty one nominations were received in total and judging took place on 19 October, with several nominees vying for the top spot.

The team on James Ward were nominated ‘in recognition of their hard work and dedication in providing an exceptional standard of care’. The nominators went on to say that ‘the whole team works together brilliantly to care for their patients with respect and dignity, whilst paying strict attention to ward cleanliness, infection control, patient safety and adequate nutrition.’

Trish Winn, head of nursing for the emergency division said: “I am delighted that James Ward has won the award. The ward is led by Sister Fay Osborne who leads from the front and has shown what an excellent role model can achieve in developing her staff.”

Sister Fay Osborne said: “This is thanks to a real team effort. I am delighted that our hard work has been recognised – it’s been a real boost to our morale. The certificate and photograph will certainly be taking pride of place on the ward.”

Awards of highly commended went to:

  • Graham White, deputy portering and security manager. Who was nominated for always being “prepared to roll his sleeves up across all of our services and will never shy away from supporting any of his colleagues within the facilities team.”
  • ‘Clinic in a box’ team – Anne Deacon, Debra Corrie, and Brigid Hillary, Family Planning team. This team were nominated for their hard work in the community which has helped to reduce the teenage pregnancy rate in Harrow by 11%.

Chief Executive Fiona Wise said: “Our staff work hard to care for patients and their relatives. These awards are about recognising this and celebrating their efforts and achievements.”

The Trust is already looking for nominations for the next round of awards and feedback from patients is also taken into account.
