State-of-the-art children’s A&E opens at Northwick Park Hospital

A new emergency department exclusively for children has opened at Northwick Park Hospital.

The new £500,000 unit, which opened its doors on Thursday 8 August, will provide emergency treatment for children 16 years and under.

Until recently children have been seen and treated among adults in the main A&E department at the hospital.

Helen Byrne, senior sister, said:

“The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, which is essential when treating distressed or anxious children.”

Majella Sharma from Harrow brought her four-year-old son to the unit and was impressed:

“It’s fantastic.  We had no waiting time whatsoever and we were seen immediately by a really nice nurse.  It is good that it is separated from the main A&E and it is a really lovely environment.”

The unit has three rapid assessment rooms, a triage room, four trolley beds, a large observation bay and a separate waiting room with toys and books.  The waiting room will soon be lined with artwork from schools in Harrow.

Twenty-three thousand children come into accident and emergency at the Trust each year.
