Press Release
Official opening of new Maxillo-Facial and Orthodontic Unit at Northwick Park Hospital
The new Maxillo-Facial and Orthodontic Unit at Northwick Park Hospital will be officially opened on Thursday 2 November by Rt. Hon. Baroness Boothroyd, O.M., P.C.
More than 1.7m people will benefit from the new unit which specialises in treating conditions affecting the mouth, face and jaws, including major facial injuries, facial deformities and cancers of the mouth, jaws, face, head and neck.
Within the new unit is a Maxillofacial Laboratory where prosthetic noses, ears and eyes are created for patients undergoing jaw surgery, orthodontic treatment and some major cancer surgery. Surgeons are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to show them what a person will look like following reconstruction. New features also include a designated children’s play area.
The purpose built facility provides a new and larger home for the internationally known Mount Vernon Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery service and now provides treatment for patients from Harrow, Hillingdon, Brent, Ealing, Slough, Watford and surrounding areas.
The new centre also combines the Orthodontic Service which was previously provided at Central Middlesex Hospital helping the expert teams offer a seamless service for patients.
The official opening comes after years of planning and collaboration with surrounding hospitals, to produce a centralised service at the heart of North West London.
Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, Mr Manolis Heliotis, said: “The Trust is delighted that Baroness Boothroyd has taken time out of her busy schedule to officially open our new unit.
“We are now able to offer the full range of head, neck and facial reconstruction which is performed by our dual skilled maxillofacial consultants. Not only are we providing this service from excellent facilities but the link with our Orthodontic colleagues has enhanced the scope and quality of the Orthognathic service which deals with facial deformities.”
Baroness Boothroyd said: “It is a privilege to open this most prestigious Unit and in so doing I pay tribute to all those whose talents and dedication improve the quality of life of many of our fellow citizens in need."
