The Trust Board
Tony Caplin Chairman
Tony Caplin became chairman of the Trust on 1 July 2008, having previously been chair of Ealing Hospital and Durlacher Plc and deputy chair of Barts and the London NHS Trust. Tony was appointed a non-executive director of the national Medical Research Council in June 2009 by the Minister of State for Science and Innovation, Lord Drayson. He is also a non-executive director of Strand Partners and chairs the council's audit committee. Tony is chairman of one of the oldest City Stockbrokers, Panmure Gordon as well as chairman of Disenco Plc and Urban Wimax Plc. He is a non-executive director of Hand Picked Hotel, Alternative Networks Plc and Northamber Plc. He is a commissioner on the Public Works Loan Board. Tony is married with two daughters and lives in Fulham and the Cotswolds. He is also a trustee of the Family Holiday Association.
Peter Coles interim Chief Executive
Peter, who took up the post in November 2011, has had a long and distinguished career in the NHS. He is also experienced as an interim chief executive, most recently at St George’s Healthcare, Medway NHS Foundation Trust and Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust.
He has first-hand experience of the integration of acute and community services at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust, Lambeth PCT and Southwark PCT.
Executive Directors
David Cheesman Director of Strategy
David joined The Trust in January 2009 as Director of Strategy, following three years at Mid Essex Hospital NHS Trust where he was Director of Operations and Foundation Trust lead. He had previously been on the Board of Whipps Cross University Hospital 2002 to 2006 as Director of Acute Services and then Director of Strategy and Performance. David started his NHS career in South East London where he worked for ten years in a variety of general management roles – eight years at King’s College Hospital and then Lewisham Hospital.
Don Fairley Director of Human Resources
Don joined the Trust in February 2009 as Director of Human Resources. He has been an executive director of HR within the NHS for 12 years, working in a variety of settings - acute, community, mental health, primary care, healthy authority and also some time at the Department of Health. Don has a MSc in Human Resource Management and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Carole Flowers Director of Nursing
Carole joined the Trust in May 2010 from Bart’s and the London NHS Trust, where she was Deputy Chief Nurse. Carole worked at Bart's and the London for 15 years in a variety of posts, including sister on the coronary care unit, clinical teacher for the cardiothoracic course and lead nurse for cardiac services. In 1999 she was appointed Head of Nursing for the Cardiac and Renal Directorate, and became Deputy Chief Nurse in 2004.
Carole trained as a registered general nurse at Ipswich Hospital and now has over 30 years of NHS experience.
Dena Marshall Director of Operations
Dena joined the Trust in May 2010 from NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, a Primary Care Trust in Greater Manchester, where she worked for over three years as Deputy Chief Executive. Prior to this, Dena was Director of Operations in two acute Trusts, in Bristol and in East Lancashire.
Outside of work, Dena is a keen hill walker and enjoys spending her leisure time climbing hills in the Lake District and North Wales.
Professor Rory Shaw Medical Director
Rory’s previous role was chief medical officer at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a professor of respiratory medicine and honorary consultant in respiratory and general medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine. Before joining Royal Berks, he was medical director of Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust. Rory was the first chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency in 2001 and is also a non-executive director of the NHS Litigation Authority
Kishamer Sidhu Director of Finance
Kishamer joined the Trust in 2008. He is a qualified accountant with broad experience of finance and procurement in the NHS. Before joining the Trust, Kishamer was Assistant Director of Finance at Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust for five years. His 11 years of experience in the NHS also include working in turnaround and financial management. Before this Kishamer was involved in academic and social research with a variety of universities and commercial organisations. Kishamer lives in Buckinghamshire with his family.
Catherine Thorne Director of Governance
Catherine took up post of Director of Governance in 2009 and holds organisational responsibility for overseeing all governance, risk and compliance arrangements within the Trust. Prior to this she was Assistant Director for Integrated Governance.
Catherine has held several managerial roles within the NHS and started her career clinically within Clinical Oncology services.
Non-Executive Directors
Andrew Murphy
Andrew was appointed as a non executive director in December 2010. Andrew is a Chartered Accountant and Finance Director of Imperial College London and will serve as the Trust’s university nominated non executive director. Prior to working at Imperial College London his extensive experience includes being a financial controller for General Electric and for two FTSE 100 companies - Amersham PLC and British Airways PLC.
Kieran Parmar

Kieran Parmar was appointed non-executive director in January 2010, and Deputy Chairman in December 2010. Kieran is a senior executive with international experience of operating at board level in executive and non-executive roles in complex organisations. He has a track record of delivering major improvements in customer service organisations, managing transformational change programmes, and developing large investment opportunities. Kieran has held senior positions in BT, C&W, Sealink British Ferries and Marathon Oil. He is currently a director in BT Global Services. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, has the Sloan Fellowship from the London Business School, and is a graduate of Cambridge University.
Kieran is married to a GP, has two children in university, and lives in Pinner, Harrow.
His duties include: Deputy Chairman of the Trust Board, Deputy Chairman Audit Committee, Chairman of the Trust Fund (Charity), member Finance Committee, and member Governance, Compliance and Risk Committee.
Shelagh Szulc

Shelagh is an independent Human Resources Consultant specialising in organisational change and start ups. She also works for Veredus on recruitment and HR assignments across the public sector and is an Independent Panellist for the Judicial Appointments Commission. She was previously Director of Recruitment and Diversity at the London Borough of Ealing and Head of Human Resources at the London Borough of Brent. She lives in Harrow and is a Governor at secondary schools in Harrow and Hertfordshire. Duties include: Chair of Governance and Risk Committee and member of HR Committee, Equality, Diversity and Social Inclusion Committee, Patient and Public Involvement and Partnership Committee.
Mark Versallion
Mark joined the Trust in March 2009. He was a local government Councillor at the London Borough of Harrow for nine years (2002-2011) where one of his roles was Chairman of the Council's Performance and Finance Scrutiny Committee which oversees the Council's budget and priority setting. With over twenty years experience in private business, including senior positions at BAE Systems plc and Capgemini UK plc, he has for the last ten years been Managing Director of a Harrow-based marketing company that advises blue-chip clients. He has also served in the military and has been a member of the Royal Navy Reserve unit in nearby Northwood since 1996. Mark is married with three children. Duties include: Chairman of the Audit Committee, member of the Finance Committee and the Board's representative on security.
Sanjay Patel
Sanjay was appointed as a non executive director in January 2012. Sanjay is the Director of Tax, Treasury and Insurance at the John Lewis Partnership, the UK’s largest employee owned company. He has also recently served as Acting Finance Director for one year on the Management Board of the John Lewis Department Stores division, where he oversaw the launch of John Lewis Financial Services. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant at the accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. For the last six years Sanjay has also been an adviser to the Resources, Audit and Governance Committee of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, set up following the death of Princess Diana. Sanjay is the Board's representative on information governance.
