National Falls Week

13-Jun-2012

Boost Your Bones is this year’s theme for Age UK’s National Falls Week from June 18 to 22.
Staff at The North West London Hospitals are helping to spread the word and educate patients, carers and staff about how to look after their bones. They are hosting a series of displays and presentations on Tuesday 19 June.
Meenaxi Shah, organiser and a member of STARRS Harrow fall service, says: “Falls are a serious problem for older people and 50 per cent of over 85s will fall badly. Side effects can be physical and psychological and can shatter an older person’s confidence, leaving them feeling isolated.
“That is why we are hosting a series of displays, presentations and a workshop to go through all aspects of bone care, so our patients can help to protect themselves.”
Members of the public are welcome to go along to meet doctors, dietitians, podiatrists and pharmacists. They will explain how to reduce the risk of falling, how a good diet can help protect bones and demonstrate how to get up safely if you do fall.
You can find the team at Northwick Park Hospital next to the Park Restaurant between 9am and 4.30pm on Tuesday 19 June. A full agenda of talks can be found at www.nwlh.nhs.uk/events
